Hamburger Steak with Country Gravy

Hamburger Steak with Country Gravy

Classic comfort food at its finest! These juicy beef patties are seared to perfection, then smothered in a creamy, seasoned country gravy. Serve over mashed potatoes or egg noodles for a hearty Southern-style dinner.

Ingredients:

For the Beef Patties:
1½ lbs lean ground beef
½ cup breadcrumbs
1 egg
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
¼ tsp ground black pepper
¼ tsp salt
¼ tsp onion powder
¼ tsp garlic powder
1 tbsp vegetable oil

For the Country Gravy:
4 tbsp butter
¼ cup flour
Pinch of cayenne pepper
¼ tsp garlic powder
¼ tsp onion powder
3 cups milk
Salt and pepper, to taste

Optional for Serving:
Mashed potatoes or egg noodles

Method:

Form and sear the patties:
In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, and seasonings. Shape into 6 evenly-sized patties. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat, and sear patties for about 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Transfer to an oven-safe plate and keep warm in a 300°F oven for 15 minutes.

Make the gravy:
In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium-low. Melt the butter, then whisk in the flour, cayenne, garlic powder, and onion powder. Keep whisking until the roux turns golden and smells toasty about 7 minutes.

Simmer and season:
Gradually pour in the milk, whisking constantly. Let it simmer for 2–3 minutes until slightly thickened (it will thicken more as it cools). Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Combine and serve:
Return the patties to the skillet and let them soak in the gravy for another 2–3 minutes. Plate it up over fluffy mashed potatoes or buttered egg noodles.
